Day 8 - Wed 25 Sep: Abu Dhabi

30 - 40 deg C (30 - 56% humidity)

The day started with a very early breakfast (6:30am) in order to be at the Congress for the 7:15 session. This is called a breakfast session and has, in the past few years, been dubbed the “no breakfast, breakfast session” So, we have all learned and had breakfast before we went. However, this year, we were pleasantly surprised when we had more than enough to feed everyone twice! We even had little cupcakes to celebrate World Pharmacists Day! The two presentations during the breakfast session were not up to the usual high standard set by previous years. Well, I didn’t think so anyway.

For the next round of presentations, I was a co-chair with Steve, and Australian military colleague and we had four presenters from Denmark, Lebanon, Japan and UK. The title of the session was Rising to the challenge: Evolving roles of emergency pharmacists. All of these presentations were highly topical and very interesting, with the presenters themselves being very engaging. Mornos was had after two presentations.

It was then time for lunch and the MEPS business meeting whilst we ate our lunch. We allow 1.5 hours for this however, this year it was all done and dusted within 30 minutes, amazing!

The afternoon session consisted of five presentations around the theme of Innovations in military and emergency pharmacologistics. The last presentation of the day was my pick – History of Navy medicine – German U-Boats in two World Wars, given by Frederik Vongehr. He is a very good presenter and managed to keep his audience engaged right up to the last word with interesting anecdotes and a bit of humour. Afternoon tea was had between presenters 3 and 4.

After that, it was back to the hotel to change and meet downstairs for dinner. Again, we had to arrange our own taxis and we all met at Byblos Sur Mer, a refined Lebanese restaurant, not too far from the Presidential Palace. We had two long tables and were served a number of dishes all for sharing. I was full after the third course! Before we knew it, it was 10:30pm and definitely time to go home. I didn’t actually get into bed until after midnight due to the long dinner which was a lot of fun.
